i-hate-the-midwest

Who knew how delicious a fresh bar of soap, dirty hair, and illfitting brandy melville underwear would feel

I close my eyes and take a deep breath.

It's following. It's getting closer. The lights turn on. They flash red white and blue.

Stuck in the midwest now. Fuck the midwest. I hate the midwest. It's more torturous being edged with the sweet fortuitous prospect of going home for the past three days than it being told to me straight. This date. This time. No. Of course it will never be this easy. No one will ever be on the same page. No one will communicate. It's okay. It's the way of life. Its the dynamic. It wouldn't have been right if it went smoothly... Right?

GET ME OUt OF HERE

After humiliating myself since Sunday night making the biggest deal of my departure. In true me fashion throwing a going away party. NOT as good as the one I threw in New York (a blackout too many and much less cocaine)

"What are the chances you'll be coming into work tomorrow?"

"ONE HUNDRED PERCENT!"--I shouted sarcastically--"Actually make that fifty/fifty. If I don't come in tomorrow it's because I slit my wrists in the bathtub"

Oh great. I'm not leaving today.

Frantic pacing through the room. The thumps are in my chest, my stomach has dropped. Hyper fixate on the sound of his soccer game. The pressure builds up in my bladder. I clench myself. They need to leave. My thoughts are in disarray. Twelve minutes. That's it. You can hold off twelve minutes Sofia. Gripping the wall, I slide down to the floor. My knees tremble and click together rapidly. Eight minutes now. The running water calls my attention. I need to piss. Seven minutes to go and he's just now showering. Dirty hands. My hands are so dirty. I have thrift store all over them. I need to piss. I can't focus when I can feel them through the door.

My brother is in Pennsylvania. Hurry up. Please pick me up. Come. Save me from them. I hate it here. I can't stand one more day. Work is miserable. Three minutes. Please don't be late for work today. I have so much planned for the hour you're not here. You mess up my time if you don't leave on time. When you're gone I will pack everything. Ready to go. Shower. I haven't showered. I need to finish packing. Everything must be gone. I can't stand it here.

One minute and I hear the ball being kicked. Leave, please leave I beg of you. I hate you. You are awful. I hate you. You're ugly. Please leave. It's two o'clock. It's time to go. I just want to yell out. LEAVE. They're gone finally they're gone. I have so much planned without them here.

*              *              *

One hour and six minutes is what it took to pack my shit and dress myself. All black outfit today. It's pathetic. It's not chic like everyone makes it out to be. It's depressing. It reminds me of funerals. It's like wearing death on your sleeve.

I sat on my suitcase. My clothing doubled in size here.

Tomorrow I will wake unaware of the week ahead. No due diligence, no respect.

The bartender takes out a Yuengling from the cooler and points it at my direction

"Not today. Can I do eight green tea shots four on mine four on his"

Two shots, half a cheeseburger, and three fourths of a white russian later my name booms across the bar. I quickly down the rest of my white russian. The room began an uproar as I walked up. I clutched my trench coat and clung it close to my body.

I bring the microphone to my mouth and the opening guitar riff of Kiss begins to play

"...Euh"

"Guess how much"

"I don't know, thirty bucks?"

He hands me a receipt with a ninety three dollar charge. Coincidentally, the blurry vision of me signing the check was the last thing I saw before it all went black. I've never paid more than fifteen dollars at this bar.

"Ya pronto nos vemos!"

My mothers text messages glared onto my face as I buried my chin deeper into my green sheets and I felt my heartbeat pulse through the mattress.

My vision began to blur, my head began to pulse, my temples felt blue, and I started to feel the thumps in my chest as I laid on my bed looking into the screen of my laptop.

I knew he was coming but I guess I thought he would delay it further. I looked around the room, clothing clung to every surface. Bullshit goodwill purchases, ill-fitting depop orders, cans of sardines, ramen, empty takeout, empty packages, books in disarray.

"Hi Michelangelo xxxxxxxxxxxx Berger xxxxxx"

I swung the door open for Newly 64 year old maître d' motorcyclist/gardener & AMERICAN-SPIRIT-YELLOW chainsmoker. He poked me in the stomach as he walked by me

"You're just so cute, I love the way you say my name"

"Have you started dating anyone?"

"No. Did you think my answer would change in a week?

"God men are so stupid. If I was 27 I'd be all over you"

"Well, you still are"

The sun beamed down on me. The air was wet. My ill-flitting jeans kept riding down as my new sequined bag rubbed on the skin of my waist in between the gap of my ill-flitting jeans and my ill-flitting top. A woman walking towards me waves and stops me.

"I always see you walking you're so cute! Where are you always going?"

"Haha thanks! It depends on the day but I'm going to the goodwill right now"

"Well would you ever wanna go on a walk together? Do you live around here?"

"Ya I live above the dentist office on [REDACTED] St."

"Would you like a new friend? Give me your number."

I give this stranger my phone number

"I'm Sofia, what's your name?"

"Here I just texted you 'stopped you on the street to say hi' I'm Molly"

"Nice to meet you"

I've ran into this woman a few times. The first we ran into each other on our ways to and fro. On fro she said "YOU'RE SO CUTE". The second time I ran into her we were on opposite sides of the street. She waved at me. I was kind of confused as to who she was but I knew it could've only been her. The third time she stopped me.

GOD I'M SO FUCKING FAT TODAY

I went on

Instead of coffee I should've just drank water and gone to the library. Nausea has overtaken me. In the shower I felt hollow. Not in an oppressive way, or a depressed way, but in a way that the entire world was shifting around me and I stood in the middle motionless. My vision might just be blurry. Maybe my eyesight is going out. It makes my head hurt. This coffee didn't help. Why do I keep coming here? I hate it here. The coffee is bad. Why did order a "caramel brulee" latte? I hate syrup in my coffee. I can't focus if I lay in bed reading or writing. I needed to get out. The day is nice. I regret not leaving my house earlier.

I've worn this skirt for the past three days and I hand washed my Brandy Melville baby tee in the sink last night just in case I wanted to re-wear this shirt today. Ended up re-wearing the shirt. The soles on my jelly shoes have worn down and the sides are snapping. The buckle flats I bought at goodwill last week started to disintegrate. All of my shoes are in disarray.

If thats how the Malasyian boy looks walking down the street, God I must look retarded.

*              *              *

Once my elbows start going out just kill me. Why is everything on Sally's body puffy? She's not fat, quite the opposite, she's clearly a thin woman. I wonder if they were to cut open her leg it would be completely black with tar

-----

"You know he has a crush on you right?"

"No I didn't know that"

I could feel her get small and sink into herself. Did I make her uncomfortable?

Ohio is like being in an expansive Walmart.

After months of daily emails attempting to confirm my appointment and accept my waitlist position. I recieve an email to check in for my appointment. I assumed that

If eating is preserving our precious bodies existence, but there is no reason for existing

The Self-Taught man describes it as pessimism. A few months ago I told The Photographer that I thought we were born to live on an Earth of suffering. He didn't agree with me. A server whom I shared a similar sentiment the other week didn't reply to my statement. People don't really enjoy this kind of talk or perspective. I can't tell if it's because of self realization. I'm not unhappy, quite the opposite. I just think its a truth of life.

Since I have one week left
-Roughly
My goal is to finish at least three of these books I have pressing time with.

"That's so gay"

"It's a trend in China"

"You know what's also a trend?
Going to the Gym"

Did a 22 year old just learn to use the insult gay? It's not that i find it insensitive I just find it monotonous, infuriating and just plain retarded.

The funniest part is that he's fat. Maybe not to any normal standards but definitely to mine and New York's. He is in constant criticism of of bodies publicly.

At two in the morning one of the Macedonians brought back one of the workers in the kitchen home. Their loud voices carried through my door.

Does new York breed the worst people ever? Fashion obsessed. Affected by culture. Maybe Im too all knowing and thats my problem. If you are so smart you are dumb. So

What is with this notion of being invisible here in the midwest?

I'd be happier if I was an affectatious little boy. I found out on his last day, the South African boy who lives in Belgium, was the same age as me. He did this thing where, he wouldn't look me in my face.

Some days I have no desire to speak to anyone. Yesterday was one of them, today was well. I've been trying to reecount where I've gone a full day without speaking to the Macedonians. I can attest to yesterday but I wonder if there's been other days.

With them I can say I'm quite curious as to the truths in which they live their lives. I can say for certain that they sleep all day. I can't say what they talk about. One of them speaks very little english. He has big wide eyes and an even bigger nose. The other everyone calls handsome. Objectively I can attest that while yes he may have the essence of beauty. I see in the true ways he lives his life. The burps he spews as loud as he can, his overbite makes me uncomftorable. and the general dirtiness.

They do everything in their power to not look or speak to me directly. Only the handsome one replies when I make an attempt to speak to them. They work in the kitchen and I hear what they say. The comments and jokes that run about eachother, myself, and others. Much of it stemming along the lines of gay jokes.

Now I dont want to be quick to judge but I see how they live their lives. They don't do anything.

Relentlessly, I've been . I went to the cafe that serves terrible coffee which only has the essense and sprinkle of a coffee bean. The cafe felt like the better choice in contrast to the library without the comfort of my music.
I half regret my choice as children run around screaming and arguing while I try to concentrate on my laptop.

An older lady, after nibbling on her muffin and sipping her cortado comes up to me.

"Believe it or not, I used to be young just like them. You are going to be old- just like me.

Thats what I like telling young people" she said to me

I smiled

"Have a blessed day" She continued about her day and left the coffee shop.

The bell of the door rang

God believers in the midwest like saying goodbye with a blessing. Which I find interesting. Why the coorelation? Why a blessing? Why not just say good day?

I burst through the doors still high from my newfound lust for life in Ohio. Everyone else begins their affternoon arguing, cramming tables, and stealing chairs around the restauraunt.

"I'm really not interesting, I don't have anything important to say"

"Yeah you do, you have a good story.
A story of courage"

I couldn't decide whether I agreed with his words or found them mildly offensive (looking back both can be true) but I guess I took it in high regard insofar that a trumpist would find me admirable in any sense.

I've barely left my room, equally my bed much except to urinate and eat breakfast (if you consider a kiwi a meal) when I received a call quarter till one.
Apparently I'm CLE stars golden child and I'm an "exemplary" figure to le restaurant insofar that my wrongdoings of taking le selfie on Mattieu's iPhone was so egregious.

I can confidently disavow any exemplary qualities attributed to me by le restaurant. Come to think of it I have half a tab of LSD that I was planning to take today on my day off. UGH I guess its too late

Relentless Sunday night. I clung myself on my stool waiting for Mattieu to finish his superfluous rounds around the tables.

At home ecstatic, on the floor, keeping myself busy. Half with no intent to go to Rudy's other half hoping someone would drag me with them. When the Macedonians left not inviting me, not even a smidge of thought towards me to even pop their heads in or yell out in my direction inquiring about my plans for the evening (a simple invite or heads up would have sufficed) Being left to my own devises, I traversed next door to find an empty saloon. The lingering cigarette smell and slightly propped door led me to peak my head in to find the Chinese man sitting in the arm chair in his underwear.

"Are they at Rudy's?" I asked

"Yes" he said in this thick accent.

Our conversation abruptly ended and I flew out the door.
I burst through the door high and mighty but the second I walked through I was reminded a Sunday night at Rudy's is not Morrissey Night but it suffices for the evening.
The bar is emptier than usual
The safe choice and sit next to the Fat Girl.

We have nothing to say to each other

I made the "righteous" choice to present myself, but I'm reminded Ohio has no avail.

I hate Ohio. I hate the Midwest. I hate the smell of the gross sweaty men in the living room that spend their days rolling around sleeping. I hate the taste in my mouth. I hate that I'm not able to go outside today. I hated that my shower smelled like fire and ash.

"I cant believe your Shhh's niece

I shrug

"Why?"

"You've got great legs" Newly 64 year old maître d' motorcyclist/gardener & AMERICAN-SPIRIT-YELLOW chainsmoker said to me

"Thats why I wear such mini dresses so I can show them off"

"I dont blame you I would too if I had those. Even if they're hairy
Are you dating anyone?"

"No"

"Well how does that work? You're charming, beautiful, and sweet.

"I thought when I would come to Ohio I would be a hot commodity.
Actually earlier today ██ █████ █████ ██. █ ███ ██████ ██████ ██████ ██ ███ ███ ██ ███ ███ ███████ ████. ██ ██ ███ ████ ███ █████. ".

"You are just adorable Sofia"

He did this thing with his tongue where he stuck it out and licked his lips. It was constant. Now since he flirted with me it's all I'm going to think about. Lorem, ipsum dolor sit amet consectetur adipisicing elit. Quis at unde nulla delectus ab, similique ut iure aperiam, expedita veniam reprehenderit

"Do I look less like a they/them today?" I asked Newly 64 year old maître d' motorcyclist/gardener & AMERICAN-SPIRIT-YELLOW chainsmoker

You would never ask a cis person their "pronouns". I am what I am. I hate how Joel gave him that in. Every time I'm here I dream of leaving. I feel better in my solitude out here. I was on the verge of tears speaking to Joel, the Maître 'd', and my uncle watching over. Tears welled in my eyes. Aritzia would make me sob. LAA never made me cry. That pure feeling of euphoria when I would clock in and see all of my friends while being myself at peace. In true me fashion. Now not only am I stuck in Ohio, I'm stuck in his haze then im also stuck in this heat. Monday will be the best day ever when I take my LSD. Maybe I'll be called in Tuesday but monday will be the day.

I started working on my website. I'll get the basics by monday. Jack was the one who told me to transcribe my little green journal back in May I'll start with that. I'm not sure if anyone will read it or care but I don't know if it's about that.

I really love Dave, at work he's never not been tender and shown me kindness. Unlike Unknown xxxxxxx who, is bitter towards everything and everyone. Probably cause he's fat. I'd be bitter too. He's >never been any> help

The corn soup was burning my finger tips. I pivoted to the bar and set down my bowl. The restaurants bartender looks up at me

"Have you heard the news?"

"No. What?"

"The good news"

"No, what is it? What's the good news?"

"Even though you have sinned, you can still find your path to God and forgiveness"

My brows furrowed slightly. I tried not to laugh in his face

"That doesn't apply to me. I don't believe in god" I responded to him

His eyes widened with judgement. In the pit of my stomach, I felt how this conversation would solidify our relationship.

"Just because you don't believe doesn't mean it isn't true"

"That may be your truth but it definitely isn't mine"

"Well there is only one truth. Something that is true cannot be false to someone else. A truth is a truth; a fact."

I looked at him completely puzzled.

He can take it. I wasn't going to fight an irrational battle that would go no where. Did people really think like this? Why would he think he can speak to me in such a manor and try to indoctrinate me in his beliefs, especially at work.

Seating myself on the stool; unbalanced, I thought about what Sophia had sent me a few days prior. About some fagxxx ranting about the pride flag and some trannyxxxxxx commending his argument. WHen I noticed the #chrstianreels note in the caption.

"prob the 12"

I woke up with a message from my brother setting the date he'll come pick me up.

Relief? Panic? I began feeling ambivalent about leaving the Midwest. On one hand I felt I've done everything I could here. On the other hand, unfinished business.

In a sweat. The fan is off.

I sit legs crossed on my mattress. I lift myself up. I graze my head on the metal rods from the top bunk. Pushing the silver deeper. It hits the wall. It won't go through. Ow. I take the silver out. My fingers graze over the backside, the hole. I stand up to the mirror. Attempting the rear entrance now. It wont go through. Fuck I knew this day would come.

Fuck I knew this day would come.

My two fingers. Blood on my two fingers. Fuuuuuuck. My altoid can will save me. Sewing needle. Not a sewing needle a pin. I take it out. I put it in. It hits the wall. OW. Maybe the direction is wrong. I wiggle it in the hole. Here feels a little thinner, this must be the exit. Let me try through the back. It wont go through. The blood has crusted over. The gunk too.

Just push it through. I wipe the blood on the needle. Deep breath. In through the front. Wiggle to find the right spot. I feel it. The needle goes through. The hole is so tight. It's burning, pulsing. Its bright red. It hurts.

It's open. Let me try the silver. It still hits the wall. Why is the right so much harder than the left. I go through the back. It's so tender and raw. The back feels concave. It goes through

I've begun to restrict food as a form of control. My only sense of self her has been my body and the clothes I adorn it with. My only saving grace has been my short lived dopamine through clothing and my ability to transform. At least I can punish myself by eating very little. My only joy is in myself and I'm very hard to entertain.

"I can see your underwear" Dong said to me

"Yeah thats the point"

"You look hot"

"Am I doing too much though?"

"You always are"

When the upstairs manager attends a Sunday karaoke night in rare occurrence my conscious choice to wear a see through skirt feels irrevocably wrong. Everyone is outside smoking. I go to the lavatory. I'm red. My skin is hot. I wore white to accentuate my new pending tan. I followed my beer outside to join the crowd. I propped myself on the stool while I observed the room. The guy on my left is into me. His piercing gaze was heavy. Although, it weighed nothing on my conscious. His camel crushes lay on the table in front of me. Without hesitation, without asking permission I reach for it. There's only one left. Without remorse I take it in my mouth.

"You have a light?"

He hands me his yellow lighter. I throw his empty pack on the table. It's half past one. The bar is closing.

Before I continue with this story any further I want to set a disclaimer. I was not attracted to him. He was attracted to me. It happened because of the laws of nature not because of the ones of attraction. At least on my end.

I part ways and say goodbye. He wants me but he says nothing about my departure. I stumble outside. I'm drunk. My judgement is impaired. Looping around the block I make my way back to the bar. Inconspicuously peeking through the window I see them take a shot at the bar. I enter the bar.

"I think I left my phone outside"

By the time I grabbed my "phone" they were outside. My plan worked to perfection.

"This is my big red truck I mentioned in there. Do you need a ride?"

"I'm ok I just live down the block"

"Alrighty"

God this guy has no fucking pull

"Actually sure I'll take a ride. It's just a left at the light down there"

He drove me the road and pulled in front of the building

"Thanks. Goodnight"

"You don't wanna keep hanging out?"

"And do what?"

"We can just sit in my truck"

Act interested about being an electrician or whatever he was and listen to the worst pseudo punk music ever. He literally knows nothing.

"What, why do you keep looking at me like that" he said flirtatiously and inquisitively

Do I seriously have to do all the work here?

-

"Do wanna take this inside?"

"Can't. My roommates will hear everything.

"We can go back to mine but I have to be up real early"

"As long as you can take me back"

We glided through the desolate streets of Ohio. The headlights created a tunnel, or a cave. I felt hollowed in through the expansive depth of the darkness. Surrounded by the night. A light glimmer of hope, trust. Driving to a demise, to uncertainty.

My judgement began to return and I felt everything wrong in the tips of my fingers. It was too late. It was going to happen because I had done it by design. The complications of the evening and the morning whirlwind past me. He reached for my hand. Disdainfully I let him take mine into his. I've given him my autonomy. I hate giving my hand away. It's always undeserving and awkward. Why are you attempting to pretend to care for me or my hands. Holding hands is sensual and primal. It's wasn't right walking up fifth avenue and it's not right here.

I picked up on the fact that he looked bad at the bar, but looked worse in stark lighting. We reached his house where he showed me around. Once he entered the kids rooms I really began to feel my devoted regret.

"Do you have any beer?"

I needed a quick fix to everything horrible I've done to myself thus far to get myself to this position

*              *              *

"Do you have a dick?" He asked while I was on top of him

HALLELUJAH

I quickly pushed myself off of him and got small into myself

"I'm sorry- I- I should go. I'll get an uber"

"No, it's okay I can take you back. I'm just a bit surprised here"

My eyes didn't leave the floor. I wouldn't look at him

"I'm sorry I thought you knew. I thought everyone did"

"You can do shit like that in New York but you can't do that here. You're lucky. This could've ended much worse if I was someone else"

As he drove me home I apologized and made myself small in the seat of his car. I didn't feel bad. Thank god I had escaped my misery. It would've been an awful fuck. I moreso played the part of being sorry and embarrassed to appease him. In reality, all I could think about was how much of a fucking retard he had to be for it to have taken him until I was half naked to realize. Whatever. Faggot

Bright and early. Something about a worm. Wrapping myself in linens and bath towels, I took myself down to the beach. Green apple in my hand, swimsuit under my white hooker dress. 7am beach yoga. Maybe I would join if I had a yoga mat. They seem really peaceful and fulfilled. Early morning yoga must make a strong will to live.

I didn't think this far into my plan. The juice from the green apple trickled down my hand

   Googles

will the juice of an apple stain my skin in the sun?

No, apple juice will not stain your skin or cause a dark mark if you go out into the sun.Why Apple Juice is SafeNo chemical reaction: Apple juice does not have the special plant oils that react with sunlight. No phytophotodermatitis: Plants like limes, celery, and wild parsnip cause bad sun reactions, but apples do not.Safe to touch: You might feel sticky, but the sun will not turn the juice into a dark spot on your skin.

can i throw an apple core into nature?

No, you should not throw an apple core into nature. Even though it is organic and will break down, an apple core takes up to two months or longer to decompose depending on the climate. During that time, it creates several environmental and safety issues.

It's too late. The ladies began to pack their yoga mat's. They were mingling. The only trashcan is by the women I'm not going back. I'll leave the apple next to me ill throw it when I leave.

Performatively reading Dostoevsky. My superpower. The book is thin but dense. I love the pink cover.

The sun shifts as the morning wanes and the afternoon waxes. Repeatedly, I have to move my towel to the sun. It was embarrassing in the morning being the only naked hooker sprawling on the sand but now the beach is fulling up so I'm less alone.

Ohio is such a travesty. This town is a joke and so are all the people in it. You can't even go to the bar to be free -where in the city nightlife is freedom.

The live music poured into the bathroom once again but today I felt more courageous than the previous week to venture in. The band covered Zombies by the Cranberries. It was magic. I ordered a second Pilsner and wandered inside and seated myself at a small table in the back. The bar was empty as everyone was watching the band on the patio. I took out my notebook.

"Is this the only bathroom in here?" someone approached me

"I'm not sure"

"It says mens"

"I really don't know. If I were you I would just go in that one" It was a single stall.

She was nervous and I noticed a stim in her hands. I went back to writing.
A few minutes later she approached me again.

"What are your pronouns by the way?"

I looked at her, then turned back to what I was doing.
She stood there waiting. I ignored her.

She began waving her hands in front of me, trying to get my attention.

"Excuse me! Hi. Sorry?" she said vivaciously

I looked up

"I'm sorry I really don't like that question. I'm a girl."

"I just wanted to say you're really pretty"

"Thank you"

Fuck I felt bad. She was clearly neurodivergent, and queer in some sense. She was a larger girl, she had a pixie cut. Maybe she was non binary. I guess it was wrong to ignore her. She was just trying to be nice. In New York I could just ignore someone, I wouldn't have paid it any mind. She just stood there, waiting.

I tried on my wardrobe, messing with the clothing, deciding and attempting to deem what would be "formal" or "appropriate" enough and which part of my body my clothing does or does not highlight. As I finished picking out what to wear I started to paint my cheeks. Brown to pink. I lifted a brown pencil to the outer corner of my eye unconsciously. Then it stuck me: this town, these people, mon oncle, Sally, even ma tante have me questioning everything about my identity and how I present myself. I didn't wear makeup in New York. Two weeks in the Midwest and I'm painting my face like a clown.

Why do I feel the need to prove myself by wearing makeup? Or by not wearing pants? Here I am attempting to signal womanhood to the people around me. Fit into their standards of identity.

Second week done. Am I morally challenged for not calling or messaging ma tante on my day off? I'm only here via her doing. I feel stunted and unsure how to approach my relationship with her since I'm not close with her and have seen her very little over the course of my life. She was close with my father so she has strong affection for my brother and I, but I already feel as if I am impeding on her life so I don't want to push my boundary.

I really don't like the Macedonians and I guess I should've called my aunt. Summer isn't too long and I can bet on myself to make this worthwhile.

They began setting up booths along the tracks of the train and in the park. I guess they're having a festival this weekend.

Live music at the Prague last night. I keep the back window in the bathroom open so it filled the air. The vivacity of the crowd enticed me.

The rocker's blue eyes peered at me with his cigarette flashing red as I came from out behind the bush. I figured from their smoke break the set was over. His shaggy hair, bangs and boot cut jeans turned me on.

When I reached the entrance when I realized I didn't belong there, there wasn't anything for me. I felt too young, too impressionable, too much of a tranny to traverse these streets alone.

The China boys have more of a comradery within themselves than they will ever have with me.

I'm so bored today

The perfect way to seal my fate on my fifth in Ohio

Ritualistic Sunday close where restaurant staff goes to the local dive for Sunday karaoke night. After drinking four whiskey on the rocks I knew it was over for me. Thank god there was more beer at home!

I woke up to extreme nausea and a pounding headache. I tossed in by bed belching and holding down puke. I'm too insane for this town. Nothing happened last night why did I drink so much? Once it reached four in the afternoon I did the painfully onerous task of making my way to the bathroom where bright yellow liquid sick filled the bowl as I gripped forehead on my knees of the bathroom.

Today is Sunday June 14th and I can feel my penmanship coming to an end through my mishap and the self loathing thats followed.

Today marks the last day of my first week.

"Be careful going out to drink around here, it's not New York- you're dealing with white trash hicks out here" mon oncle said to me

I can't decide if my relationship with alcohol at he ripe age of 21 was normal but it lies within the accessability of New York, where self control is difficult and access to everything is everywhere.

The downstairs manager, Sally, has clear disdain for me which will be difficult to penetrate after our first two interactions, neither positive. I can at least attest to the fact that I have myself and my own hard work to save myself from the impression I left.

My ability to win people over has never failed me thus far through interaction and being true to myself, but someone like Sally is not charmed by a girl like me, my attitude, or state of being in general, given, she's old (I won't speak for her because I don't know her) But what I can say is that I have the control to can be nice, I can be cordial.

"Some of us are going to grab a drink at Prauge if you wanna come"

I agreed and asked one of them to grab me from the apartment when they were ready to head over. While I waited for the crew to finish their closing duties, I decided to journey to the convenience store. As I took my first steps outside, thousands of mayflies filled the air, slamming and clinging onto walls and swarming light fixtures. Disgust permeated me. With my persistent desperation I departed to the store. Through an impeded walk, I arrived to find the store closed and covered in insects. it closed at 10. All I wanted was a pack of Marlboro's.

********

"Sofia is the prettiest girl in [REDACTED small town in Ohio]" said the gay Malaysian boy

I leaned my head back in the soft headrest of the Jeep Wrangler seat. Out the window the mayflies smashed into every surface. The crunching sound of their bodies made a popping sound underneath the tires of the cars. Maybe a burrito would've helped but I refused to order one.

We arrived at the bar to find the small crowd of our coworkers looming around the pool tables. The Chinese boy and I sat at the bar patiently waiting for the bartender to take our order.

"Whiskey on the rocks"

"Any preference?"

"Whatever you have on the well is fine"

"What about you?" The bartender asked my new Chinese friend, Dong

"Jim Bean on the rocks"

The liquor portions in Ohio were dangerously larger than the ones back in the city

"Do you have any chinese cigarettes?" I asked Dong

"Yeah, do you smoke?"

We stepped out and sat on the outdoor bar

"I can tell you must be crazy because that's what I order when I'm back in China"

"It's just my drink of choice" I responded

For the first time I felt a sense of familiarity in the Midwest with a glass of whiskey in my hand and a cigarette clinging from my fingers.

I had exhausted myself last night but at least the heat became bearable. I've laid in this room since 9. I can feel how frightened I am by the two men in the living room.

I made my first three drinks yesterday working behind the bar.

Lemon drop.
Dirty Grey Goose martini.
Cosmopolitan.

It appears on the weekdays I'll be hosting and the weekends behind the bar.

Working behind the bar is a receiving end of alcohol in it's truest sense and form. Facing sobriety first hand. After I left New York I promised myself I wouldn't smoke or drink but my boredom has taken over.

Once released from my first day I attempted to explore the town. I made it down half the block when the rain began to settle upon me like a curse. The sceney bar (the only establishment open past midnight) is positioned where the businesses stop and the houses begin. I was too frightened to lurk in there by myself.
I can't say I expect much from this town but new experiences thrill me. I'm capable of turning anxiety into excitement and I can stimulate myself.

Embark on this journey.

I didn't expect everyone in this town to be old. Who would have known that the only youth relies within. What is it like for a girl like me here? My transgenderism scares me and I thank god for my blessing of beauty. What if I'm "found out" or killed? The quiet and stillness is haunting which makes it difficult to grasp the environment or culture of my surroundings. New York is large and vast and I don't live with the fear of disappearing. Here the streets are wide and tree lined. Would anyone notice in these empty streets?

I ran home with a vehicle and the rain looming on me.

Today I will traverse with my slip dress. It's a starving summer. The Czech restaurant reminds me of drunk nights at the 24 hour Ukrainian restaurant on E 9th St.

My first day of work at le restaurant is June 10th.
It's hotter than hell in this apartment. I don't know what I'm walking into. Le Patron is CLE famous and I'm the nepo baby.

He bought me two pairs of Adidas but I feel guilty knowing I won't wear them. I wore my perfect army skirt and hat, paired with my ugly paper thin white shirt and ballet slippers. I'm sticky and sweaty and the heat is unbearable.

The apartment is located on the second floor above a dentist office and a drop shipping boutique. Three one bedrooms. Apt 1 is occupied by Stacy. Apt 2 by two Chinese, and one Malaysian exchange students. Apt 3 has me and two Macedonian students.

The Macedonians in the living room frighten me. I'm best off on my own so at least I have my own room. It seems fate cannot escape me. The apartment is hot and stagnant. The building is run down and grimy. The bathroom is tiled green, the fixtures are old and rusted. The carpets are brown and filthy. The walls are beige and panelled. None of the doors to the apartments lock. The bedroom in the adjacent apartment's walls are yellow, covered in tar with a lingering smell of cigarettes.
